Tympana stone is Richard Bossons and Rita Dawe, who between them have over twenty years experience working with stone in commercial settings and in their own workshop. They design, carve and fix their own work, ranging from hand drawn and cut lettering to restoration of architectural masonry and carving and commissions for bespoke sculptural pieces.

Tympana stone are members of the Cotswold Craftsmen and associate members of the Gloucestershire guild of craftsmen, through which they also exhibit their individually designed pieces.

Their approach is firmly craft based, with aesthetics and a desire to emulate the best practice of previous generations of carvers and sculptors informing and inspiring their work.

Carving and Sculpture

Tympana stone can provide a design through to fixing service for carved detail on buildings, replicating surviving carving or starting anew. Drawings and clay models would be produced for initial approval on historic properties and bespoke sculptural work for any era home or garden can be produced in a wide range of styles. Richard and Rita have shown their sculptural work in both craft exhibition and gallery settings and have completed projects varying from wedding gifts to entire pinnacles for church towers.

Letter Cutting in Stone

All of the lettering is drawn and cut by hand in limestone, sandstone or slate. This is a painstaking but rewarding process, which produces letter forms totally removed from the sandblasted computer typefaces which prevail but for little, if indeed any, extra cost. Initially a scale sketch would be provided with any quote for discussion of options for layout and fonts. Once this stage is agreed, a full size drawing would be provided for final approval.
